3D model Indiegogo campaign by Nikolai Mamashev

Nikolai Mamashev is running a new Indiegogo campaign to create a new derivation based on the Pepper&Carrot universe. You can read about his previous project here. His goal this time? Get $2,000 to support the creation of a full 3D model of Pepper, ready to be animated like a puppet, for animation in the software Blender3D. The license of the project: CC-By. You can read more of the story and details of the project here:

Do you think it is a good deal - the model in that quality for 2000 bucks? When I am looking at Sintel and Cosmos Landromat quality, this one seems not good enough. Or did I miss something?

No idea, I don't know how a equally skilled 3D artist would ask for a commission including modeling/texturing and rigging. Do someone know it?

Regarding the price I recommend to take a look at this discussion - https://forums.unrealengine.com/communi … post203242

> It's more like $1-3k per character model, rigged but without animations.

Consider also platform fees (10%-12%) plus additional costs of producing crowdfunding rewards and you can see the $2k is a kind of bargain.

There are also similar results could be found by googling:

As far as I can see he only showed the model in Blenders live preview. It would have been better to see it rendered in action because based on my experiences – as a teaching assistant for Blender – models tend to look a lot better when actually rendered (with corrrect shaders).

@Kätzchen So it is a pity that he did not do that. I can only compare what I see and what he has shown is not good enough for me. I have also looked at the 8 s in action video, but it is so fast that I can not recognize any important details. It looks like he very underestimated the promotion of his work.
@David It is the second time I have catch you edited/erased some comments without any notice. Why? Is this the way you want to go?

True I edited my first reply here because I wrote it on a bad day affecting my mood and my point-of-view. I removed just another paragraph; an additional thinking/feeling I had. I don't think editing the comment to remove this part was a bad thing but, ok; next time I'll write a [edit] tag plus the cause for the one who saw the original comment.

Consider, that you can download full model and test its features by yourself (including its look on render) - https://gumroad.com/l/ivan-3d-model
You can download model for free - just enter "0" (zero) in the "Price" field.

I would like to urge people to look at his indiegogo for more examples of his work. The short clip he showed in the intro video doesn't do it justice imo. There is a sample animation clip that really shows you how the model will look like if it is used in a movie/video.

True, this one: https://youtu.be/S4hLaRLSqdM , animation by Raul Ibarra.

I'm willing to see the result, I do a little bit of 3D modeling (as long it isn't for animation I can handle it XD) and tried to do rigging once and I know how hard it is, the artist seems to be pretty good.

Oh yes, no doubt Nikolai as experience doing this type of model.

Thank you for sharing the link here. I'm glad you finished your project. Thanks for giving Pepper a try at 3D modeling and shading. But I wouldn't reuse a model like the one you did or be attracted to see 3D artwork with it ; too many mistakes in the model; especially anatomy , it removes a lot of appealing compare to the original character design. Too many parts in your 3D model screams for more modeling care and better understanding of anatomy shapes under the clothes.

Thank you for the devastating criticism of the model that is not yet complete. I have lost any motivation whatsoever to finish it now. Maybe I should not have laid out the stages of the process. And in general, anything to do. I'm going to delete the project. Thank you very much David.

@xwst
It is always your choice no matter what others say. And your lastly posted choice is IMHO pretty immature. Why did you choose to make a Pepper model in the first place then?

link   David Revoy   Author , - Reply

Sorry, I thought you shared it as a ' finished' project ( that's why I said "Thank you for sharing the link here. I'm glad you finished your project. " ) . I didn't understood it was something "in progress" and I thought you were expecting my honest opinion about it as a end result, almost in competition to what is proposed by Nikolai on this topic of the 3D model campaign. I did not wanted to hurt, it was general criticism about the model to evaluate it but now I reread my words, I could probably bring the concept more 'smoothly'. So, sorry about that, don't take it personnal and see in it an opportunity to enhance the model, I can help with draw over to guide you if you are still willing to work on it.

i'll send some results later to you mail, now i need to prepare some my report for moscow cg conference about NPR in Blender

Dear Haz! Can you please clarify at which aspect this model looks "not good enough" for you? This model got a dozen of positive feedback at BlenderNation - https://www.blendernation.com/2016/07/1 … load-ivan/

Look who it was that woke up when there were three days left to the deadline! Lol!
